As with anything, the stronger the process, the less room for error. Compass Group Insurance is what you would call an FMO. What is an FMO and why would you ever want to partner with them? Great question, let’s hit it:
When you get your insurance license, you have the choice to go independent or captive. Captive is when you go work for a singular company and you can ONLY write business for that company. While that is fine and great and all, when you go independent, you can write for MULTIPLE carriers. This route is great for agents whose clients don’t all fit into the same box.
So you’ve decided to go independent. Awesome. How do you get your contracts with the carriers? Well, you can go directly to them and request contracts. Can you imagine dealing with hundreds of individual carriers, contracts, products, training for each company, etc.? Our heads hurt just thinking about it.
The solution: Go with an FMO. A Field Marketing Organization. A good FMO should provide you with contracts, training, and support so you need to find the right one to partner with. What happens is that there are FMOs out there that just provide you with contracts and then move on without holding your hand throughout your developmental process as a new agent.

Not magic although we have seen some pretty amazing sales skills that have resulted from our training classes. As an FMO, we get an administrative processing fee on the policies you write. They pay us, you don’t. If you don’t write business, we never get paid. You could say, if we don’t help you be successful, then we fail as well. We have to be invested in you and your growth. Otherwise, this whole business model does not make sense.
